Safe Driving Guide in Cancun & Yucatan

Everything you need for confident, relaxed driving: speed limits, highway tolls, checkpoint protocols, emergency numbers, and family road tips.

Essential Traffic Regulations

Current rules to keep your family completely safe on the road.

Official Speed Limits

Cancun Hotel Zone: 60 km/h (monitored by speed cameras). City streets and school zones: 30 to 40 km/h. Federal Highway 307: 80 to 100 km/h. Toll Highway 180D to Valladolid/Merida: 110 km/h.

Mandatory Child Car Seats

By Quintana Roo traffic law, children under 5 years of age or under 1.35 m in height must ride in the rear seats in a certified child safety seat or booster (Easy Way provides these).

Zero Alcohol Tolerance

Cancun and the Riviera Maya strictly enforce zero-tolerance breathalyzer checkpoints. If driving, completely refrain from consuming alcoholic beverages.

Seatbelts and Mobile Phone Usage

Seatbelts are legally mandatory for all passengers (front and back). Holding a cell phone while driving is prohibited; use hands-free dashboard mounts.

Highway Logistics

Tolls, Speed Bumps, Checkpoints & Fuel

Speed Bumps ("Topes")

Speed bumps are common when approaching towns and pedestrian crossings. Marked with yellow signs. Slow down smoothly to 10-15 km/h to pass gently without jostling kids.

Toll Roads (Cuotas)

The Cancun - Valladolid - Merida Highway (180D) is modern, well-paved, and fast. Toll booths accept cash in Mexican Pesos (MXN). Always keep cash handy for tolls.

Routine Police Checkpoints

Preventative police checkpoints operate at municipal entry points. Slow down, roll down your front windows, and turn on the interior dome light at night. Officers are polite to family tourists.

Gas Stations & Full Service

Gas stations in Mexico are full-service with attendants. Ask for "Magna" (regular) or "Premium". Always verify the pump meter reads $0.00 before fueling begins. Credit cards and cash are accepted.
